She attended boarding school in London between the ages of seven and nine, after which her family relocated towards Toronto, Canada, where she spent the majority of her childhood and young adulthood. Contractor was given the lead part in Pericles after a one-year stint at University. She auditioned for the role during the Stratford Shakespeare Festival (Ontario Canada) and won. She received rave reviews for her performance on the stage in 92 productions. in the production. It was also voted"the best show of 2002" by Canadian critics in 2002. She was invited to join Stratford's conservatory. It is a place which allows just four men and eight females can attend a 20 weeks crash training in classical theater.
